Soo: Plate Action Under Way#06

Alain Giraud (ENG) prepares to finish after his adventurous triple at Paraparaumu

DAY 5: REPORT ON PLATE PLAY

The Plate blocks were split between Paraparaumu and Waikanae today, while the main knockout started at Kelburn and Wellington. The Plate format is eight blocks of five or six players each, the eight block winners advancing to a knockout. The only triple of the day at Paraparaumu was by Alain Giraud (ENG) and featured an adventurous finish. Having failed the normal delayed penult peel, Giraud's straight penult peel went through by a bit over two yards. His cut rush to rover left him about four and a half yards out, 20 degree angle. The peel went through cleanly, and his flat hoop stroke ran past partner without hitting it. He considered taking the immediate cut rush back to the peg, but opted to hit the one opponent ball south of rover, and from there the finish was trivial.

Annabel McDiarmid (ENG) had an immediate four-ball break after Paul Bennett's (USA) lift shot hilled off severely, and she made playing on the sometimes challenging lawn 1 look easy as she managed two peels of a standard triple. A hiccup around rover gave Bennett another chance, but McDiarmid continued her excellent shooting form to hit in and finish in two turns.
