Matt Smith Wins Midwestern Regionals

Matt Baird presents award to Matt SmithTULSA, OKLAHOMA -- Matt Smith defeated Jeff Caldwell 22-13 to take the USCA's Midwestern Region singles championship flight. Caldwell opened the action with a break that took yellow through four-back, but didn't quite get an ideal leave set for red (for wicket two). That left the door open for Smith. It didn't take long for Smith to get his first break and from there he pretty much controlled the action.

Caldwell did take a chance on an attack later in the game as Smith left a ball on court near his partner in corner one; however, his red ball glanced the stake (shooting from near wicket three). Caldwell proceeded with the roquet attempt, but it failed and Smith built his final break for the win.

Smith had advanced to the finals by beating George Cochran in the semi-finals, while Caldwell defeated Dan Bennett to earn his spot.

In the first flight action, Glen Taylor knocked of Pat Garner 15-14 for the singles win. Taylor advanced by defeating Bob Bozeman, while Garner took out Kevin McQuigg on his side of the bracket.
