Leadership Transition at Croquet New Zealand: New Chair Appointed

Darla Blake Takes Helm as Board Chair While Stefan Horrer Steps Down After Three Years as Chief Executive

Croquet New Zealand (CNZ) is undergoing significant leadership changes with the appointment of a new Board Chair and the announced resignation of its Chief Executive, marking a pivotal transition period for the national sporting organization.

New Board Leadership

Effective July 1, 2025, Darla Blake has assumed the role of Board Chair following Tony O'Donnell's decision to step down from the position. O'Donnell, who has served as Chair for five years since the governance restructuring, will continue as a Board Member through the constitutional transition process.

Blake brings extensive governance expertise to her new role, having served her second term as a Board Member with tenure extending until the 2026 Annual General Meeting. Her professional background spans over 25 years in public service executive positions, successful business ownership, and strategic advisory roles across local government and community development sectors.

Her qualifications include a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Management, Post Graduate Certification in Economic Development, and certification as a Business and Personal Coach, positioning her well to guide CNZ through its upcoming constitutional implementation.

"I am honored to serve as the new Chair for CNZ, particularly during this critical transition period," Blake stated. "Building strong relationships with our member affiliates through enhanced communication and support will be fundamental to our success as we continue maturing as an organization."

Chief Executive Departure

Simultaneously, CNZ announced that Stefan Horrer has tendered his resignation as Chief Executive after three years of service. Horrer will remain in his position through the Annual General Meeting in early October 2025, with his final day scheduled for October 10, ensuring continuity during the constitutional adoption process.

Under Horrer's leadership, CNZ has undergone substantial organizational improvements and successfully navigated challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and compliance with the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. His departure comes as he seeks to prioritize family time and return to playing croquet.

Outgoing Chair O'Donnell praised Horrer's contributions, noting his excellence in improving CNZ's structural foundation and the invaluable support provided to both leadership and the broader croquet community throughout his tenure.

Looking Forward

Blake acknowledged the significant work ahead, emphasizing the organization's commitment to growth and development across New Zealand's croquet landscape. The Board will announce recruitment procedures for the Chief Executive position in due course.

The leadership transition occurs as CNZ prepares to implement its new constitution, representing a crucial period for the sport's governance and future direction in New Zealand.

Both departing and incoming leaders expressed optimism about CNZ's trajectory, with continued focus on member support, organizational maturity, and advancing croquet's profile throughout the country.
