Top seed overcomes tactical battle to defeat Pailas in thrilling Pro Division final
Matt Smith claimed the Pro Division title at the 2025 US Golf Croquet Classic, defeating Daniel Pailas 7-4, 7-5 in a tactical final that showcased the highest level of competitive croquet at Washington Park's Denver Croquet Club.
The July 10-12 tournament, marking the third stop on the 2025 MCA Series Tour, concluded with Smith demonstrating superior tactical positioning and hoop control throughout the best-of-two championship match.
Championship Final Highlights
Smith established early control in the opening game, building a 3-1 lead before Pailas mounted a comeback to level at 4-4. With Smith losing Hoop 8, he earned the opportunity to "run the gambit" and successfully converted Hoops 9, 10, and 11 to secure the 7-4 victory in approximately 45 minutes.

The second game proved more challenging for Smith, as Pailas opened with a precision five-yard shot to take an early 1-0 advantage. Despite falling behind 2-0 after Pailas converted a remarkable 21-yard boundary shot at Hoop 2, Smith rallied to tie the match 2-2.
Pailas regained control, winning three of the next four hoops to reach 5-3 and again winning Hoop 8 to put Smith in gambit position. The pivotal Hoop 9 battle featured multiple clearing attempts by Pailas from the west boundary before an inadvertent jawing incident led to an out-of-turn sequence requiring extended adjudication.
Smith's patience and tactical positioning ultimately prevailed at Hoops 10 and 11, allowing him to level at 5-5 and take a 6-5 lead. The final hoop saw continued boundary clearing attempts by Pailas, but Smith maintained his blocks and court position to secure the championship after 95 minutes of intense competition.
Tournament Structure and Upsets
The Pro Division featured 13 players competing in two six-player blocks, with the top three from each advancing to knockout play. Despite both Smith and Pailas entering as top seeds, block play produced notable upsets that relegated both to #2 seeding positions.
In Group A, Steve Berry defeated Smith 7-5 to claim the top seed, with his only loss coming to Ned Sperry, currently ranked #60 in US Golf Croquet standings. Sperry's strong 2025 season includes victories at the Steuber Classic and finals appearances at the Croquet Week GC Tournament and Albemarle Open.
Group B saw local standout Carter Harrison deliver the tournament's most dominant performance, finishing 5-0 in block play after defeating Pailas 7-4 and tournament reporter Dylan Goodwin 7-6.
Playoff Drama
The Pro Playoff quarterfinals produced the tournament's most dramatic match, as Smith faced local competitor J. Josh Still in a grueling three-game battle. After splitting the first two games 7-5, the match required the "Bromley" three-hoop tiebreaker format, with Smith advancing 2-1 through Hoops 4, 5, and 6.
Pailas advanced past Ned Sperry with convincing 7-5, 7-1 victories before defeating top-seeded Berry 7-4, 7-4, 2-0 in the semifinals. Smith's semifinal against Harrison proved more decisive, with the eventual champion winning 7-2, 7-4.
