Croquet and Community Come Together at 2025 Rockfish GC Tournament

July 20, 2025

The 2025 Rockfish Golf Croquet Tournament was held July 3-6, 2025, at the Chesapeake Bay Croquet Club near Harfield, Virginia, offering players and spectators a spirited blend of competition and community engagement under sunny skies and warm 80-degree temperatures. The event coincided with the bustling Blue Crab Arts & Crafts Festival, which attracted approximately 2,000 attendees. Many festivalgoers were introduced to croquet for the first time, either through spectating or hands-on opportunities to try the sport themselves.

A Weekend of Hospitality and High-Level Play

Saturday evening featured a classic Chesapeake Bay CC feast for tournament participants, including all-you-can-eat steamed crabs, pulled pork, and southern fried chicken — a hallmark of the tournament’s signature hospitality.

The tournament welcomed a special group of newcomers this year, the Hawkins family from West Virginia. Despite having played just two or three games prior to the event, Jim Hawkins and his sons Jimmy, Alex and Charles joined the doubles competition. As part of a high-low pairing format, each Hawkins family member was teamed with one of the tournament’s top players, creating an ideal learning experience. Their improvement was evident with each round, highlighted by Jimmy Hawkins and his partner, Marc Stearns, finishing as doubles runners-up.

In a tightly contested doubles final, Gil Goetz and John Woods edged out Hawkins and Stearns to claim the title.

Tournament Leadership

Macey White directed the event, which was managed by Julie Woods. Referees Macey White, Marc Stearns and Nancy Crouch handled officiating duties, ensuring smooth and fair play throughout the weekend. The 2025 Rockfish GC Tournament successfully blended competitive spirit with community outreach and tradition, offering a weekend to remember for both seasoned players and enthusiastic newcomers.
